Six Intimacy Tips for Women in Long-Distance Relationships

With 32 years in the Army, a couple of deployments, and numerous relationships, including long-distance ones, I know a thing or two about how to handle them. Trying to maintain a relationship long distance can be a rollercoaster, especially when it comes to keeping intimacy alive. Whether you’re separated by a few states or across the globe, keeping that connection going takes creativity, effort, and a little planning. Here are some tried-and-true tips for keeping the spark alive.

1. Schedule “Us Time”? Absolutely

We all know that life gets busy, but setting aside dedicated time for your partner is crucial. Sync up your calendars and commit to regular video calls or virtual dates. Pro tip: Use themed video calls—think “movie night,” “dinner date,” or even “game night.” Video communicating has come a very long way since 2003 when it was first available to me. It’s extremely inexpensive, so you can watch that movie together, grab takeout and have an indoor picnic, or play video games and make it seem that. you are closer in proximity than you really are. So that leads to…

2. Invest in Connection-Enhancing Technology

The tech world has gifted long-distance couples with tools designed to close the gap. Consider trying apps like Love Nudge to track love languages or devices that let you share a virtual touch. There are numerous gadgets that can help you stay connected with your long-distance lover. A pair of synchronized bracelets that light up when you think of each other? Yes, please! Pure Romance will debut a collection of app-enhanced toys that will enable you to get creative with intimacy. Check back in early 2025!

3. Get Playful with Surprises

Who doesn’t love an unexpected gift or sweet message? Send handwritten letters, a playlist of songs that remind you of them, or a care package filled with their favorite treats. For extra spice, slip in something personal—like a flirty note or a sensual surprise to keep the romance sizzling.

4. Keep Communication Fresh

Texting “How was your day?” can get old fast. Spice things up with voice messages, surprise video calls, or fun apps that let you play games or answer relationship quizzes together. Dive deeper into topics like future plans, shared goals, or even cheeky fantasies to keep things interesting. You can send voice messages on Facebook as well as the phone. It’s SO much better to hear your SO’s voice when possible. AT&T’s motto used to be “The next best thing to being there,” meaning hearing their voice if you can’t actually be with them, and it’s as true today as it was back then.

5. Plan Real-Life Meetups

There’s nothing more exciting than seeing each other in person. Whether you get together once a month or once a year, plan visits that include time for connection and intimacy. Create a shared countdown to build anticipation for the big day. Remember, absence makes the heart grow fonder.

6. Prioritize Self-Care

Taking care of yourself physically and emotionally makes you a better partner. Regular exercise, keeping your mind active and investing in your sexual wellness can keep you feeling confident and connected, even from afar.

Long-distance relationships aren’t easy, but with a little creativity, technology, and intentional effort, they can thrive. Remember, it’s the little things done consistently that keep love strong across the miles!
