Pheromones are chemical substances secreted by all animals to help communicate with members of the same species, primarily of the opposite sex. They are known as nature’s chemical calling card, and help with attraction, both for selection of a mate and for reproduction.
For example, with cats, you have probably seen them rub up against people, corners of doors and walls, and each other. They are rubbing their pheromones in the scent glands in their cheeks to mark their territory and exert dominance. It helps reduce conflict and maintain social order within a group.
Our sense of smell is one of our more powerful of all, and that has developed over the generations. However, it is somewhat less understood in humans than in other animals. Perhaps that’s because we want to think we have more control over our reactions than other creatures do. However, we do both produce and respond to pheromones, and studies have shown they are key in human attraction and social bonding.
Have you ever met someone and taken an instant dislike to them? It’s most likely because you didn’t like how they smelled. It’s not because of the perfume or cologne they were wearing. It’s because their individual pheromones were not pleasant to you. This is not a conscious decision, rather it is innate to everyone. So the next time this happens to you, think about what exactly made you not like the individual. Sure, there could be many other reasons why, but don’t discount your olfactory senses.
